Volunteer with Generation Soil: Growing from the Ground Up

Updated: Apr 17

Are you passionate about food system transformation?

If so, you’re not alone—and Generation Soil CIC would love to hear from you. We're building a movement rooted in community, regeneration, and nature-led solutions to address the environmental and social challenges of our current food system. Whether you're into soil health, climate action, or community wellbeing, there’s a place for you here.

But volunteering with Generation Soil isn’t just about doing good for the world. It’s also about doing good for yourself. Did you know that when you come into contact with soil, your skin absorbs a beneficial bacterium called Mycobacterium vaccae? This naturally occurring microbe activates neurons that produce serotonin, often called the “happy hormone.” So, by spending time outdoors helping us regenerate soil, you’re literally cultivating joy in your own body.

That’s the power of community composting and nature-based work—it’s not just about environmental regeneration, it’s also about personal and collective wellbeing.

Why Volunteer with Generation Soil?

At Generation Soil, we’re rethinking the way we grow, eat, and share food. We collect food waste, compost it with locally sourced woodchip, and return it to the land to enrich soil and grow nutrient-dense food. We're also developing an agroforestry market garden, delivering food system education workshops, and encouraging circular and decentralised food systems.

We're doing a lot—but we can't do it alone.

Volunteering with Generation Soil means becoming part of a growing network of changemakers who believe in a better way forward. Whether you're looking to get your hands dirty or lend a hand behind the scenes, we welcome all skills, backgrounds, and passions.

Volunteer Opportunities

There are many ways you can support our work, both in-person and remotely. Here’s a look at the areas where you can get involved:

🌱 Market Garden Volunteers

Help us bring our agroecological vision to life! We’re setting up a new market garden based on regenerative and agroforestry principles. This means a lot of planting, weeding, compost turning, and helping to nurture trees, vegetables, and soil biodiversity. It's a hands-on role and a great way to learn about sustainable growing practices while connecting with nature and community.

Whether you’re an experienced grower or a curious beginner, you’ll be supported every step of the way. Plus, the added bonus—serotonin-boosting soil contact!

📱 Social Media Volunteers

Are you a social media whizz? We’re looking for creative individuals to help us spread the word online. You could be designing posts, writing captions, sharing stories from the garden, or raising awareness about composting, food waste, and soil regeneration. This is a great role for someone who’s passionate about communication, storytelling, and inspiring action through digital channels.

Help us build a vibrant online community that reflects the richness of our work on the ground.

🗂️ Office + Admin Support

Behind every great compost system is… a spreadsheet (or five). If you're organised, detail-oriented, and enjoy working on logistics, we’d love your help with administrative tasks. This could include scheduling workshops, managing emails, updating databases, or assisting with grant applications and reports.

You don’t need to be a soil expert—just someone who likes keeping things running smoothly.

🎓 Workshop Support

We deliver interactive, educational workshops focused on food systems, composting, microorganisms, and nature-based climate solutions. Volunteers can help us prepare materials, assist on the day, and engage with participants. This role is ideal for someone who loves education, public engagement, and sharing knowledge in creative ways.

If you’re enthusiastic about sparking curiosity and building awareness, we’d love your support in our learning spaces.

🤝 Board Membership + Strategic Support

We’re a growing CIC with big dreams. If you have experience in governance, finance, community development, or strategic planning, consider joining the Generation Soil board. This is a leadership role where you can help shape the direction of our organisation, ensure accountability, and support long-term sustainability.

We’re committed to building a diverse and inclusive board that reflects the communities we work with. Your voice and perspective matter.

💡 Got Another Idea?

Not seeing your perfect role listed? That’s okay—we’re always open to new ideas. Whether you want to fundraise, create educational content, run community events, or bring a skill we haven’t even thought of, let us know. We’re building from the ground up, and we’d love to welcome your talents.

Let’s Regenerate Together

Volunteering with Generation Soil is about more than just giving your time—it’s about becoming part of a solution. A solution that addresses food waste, supports biodiversity, builds healthy soil, and nurtures community resilience.

In return, you’ll gain skills, experience, new connections, and a deeper relationship with nature. Not to mention the sheer joy of compost turning into life-giving soil and food.
