Generation Soil and Roots Allotments Launch a Market Garden

At Generation Soil, we are passionate about transforming food waste into a resource that nurtures both our soil and our communities. That’s why we are thrilled to announce our new partnership with Roots Allotments, an innovative provider of shared spaces for local food production. Together, we are launching a new agroforestry market garden at Roots’ Leigh Woods Meadows growing community in Bristol, to grow nutrient-rich food while regenerating the land beneath our feet.

A Partnership Rooted in Regeneration

Roots Allotments is at the forefront of improving access to land by providing growing spaces for people eager to cultivate their own produce. This partnership is another crucial step towards creating a truly circular food system that enriches the soil and supports local food security.

Our mission at Generation Soil is to regenerate soil health by composting food waste from local people and businesses. This nutrient-rich compost is then used to grow fresh, chemical-free produce. Through this partnership, the market garden will serve as a model for how decentralised composting and community-based agriculture can strengthen local food networks and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Growing Food, Nourishing Communities

The new market garden will span up to two acres within the Roots Allotments community, providing a productive and regenerative space where nutritious fruit and vegetables can be grown. This produce will be distributed throughout the local community, supporting those who struggle to access fresh, high-quality food.

Beyond food production, the market garden will also be a hub for education and community engagement. We will run workshops highlighting the importance of composting, soil regeneration, and sustainable growing techniques. These sessions empower individuals to play an active role in creating a healthier food system, demonstrating how waste-to-soil solutions can divert food waste from landfill while enhancing biodiversity and soil fertility.

A Shared Vision for Local Food Security

Ed Morrison, one of the founders of Roots Allotments, expressed his excitement about this collaboration, stating:

“We are absolutely thrilled to announce this new partnership with Generation Soil. When it comes to partners for our market garden, they truly are a fantastic fit as we share the same vision of empowering communities and driving local food security through sustainable practices. I’m really excited to see what the team achieve with the market garden, nurturing and regenerating the soil to grow fantastic produce. This will then create a resilient and sustainable food source for the community, supporting local people and businesses, as well as those who struggle to access quality produce that is full of nutrients and free from chemicals.”

Our founder and director, Alex Montgomery, echoed this sentiment:

“When the opportunity came up to partner with Roots on its market garden initiative, it was one we couldn’t pass up. We want to inspire and empower communities to think differently about waste and food and encourage them to adopt circular food systems that help reduce waste, improve our soil, and benefit the environment. Through the growing of quality produce and community outreach, this market garden partnership with Roots is a great way to do this.”

Scaling Up for a Greener Future

This market garden will be the second established by Roots Allotments, following the success of their Croydon site in partnership with Black Farmers Market CIC. That initiative was launched to address the lack of diversity in UK horticulture and create opportunities for aspiring growers from underrepresented backgrounds.

As Roots expands across the UK, opening growing spaces in Bath, Leeds, Nottingham, Sheffield, Stourbridge, and Chelmsford, more market gardens will be established. Each will provide fresh, locally grown produce while fostering education, biodiversity, and sustainable land management.

Join Us in Creating a Regenerative Food Future

At Generation Soil, we believe that food waste is not a problem but a solution. By turning waste into compost and regenerating soil, we can grow healthier food, support local economies, and build more resilient communities. This partnership with Roots Allotments represents a significant step toward that vision.

We are excited to welcome volunteers, workshop attendees, and anyone eager to learn more about sustainable growing practices to join us at the new market garden. Whether you are an experienced gardener, a newcomer to growing, or simply passionate about creating a better food system, there is a place for you in this movement.

Stay tuned for updates on our progress and upcoming events at the market garden. Together, we can turn waste into abundance and cultivate a future rooted in sustainability, regeneration, and community resilience.
