Community Composting in Bristol

Generation Soil runs Bristol's community composting project, connecting households, businesses and growing spaces through a shared local food waste system.

Over 100 Bristol households are already taking part. Join them from £5/month.

What is community composting?

Community composting is a shared approach to food waste, where a neighbourhood or city composts together rather than individually.

Instead of every household managing their own compost bin, food waste is collected, composted at scale, and returned as living compost to everyone who takes part.

It's composting made simple. And it works better.

Bristol's community composting project

The Bristol Living Compost Project is Generation Soil's community composting scheme, running weekly collections across central Bristol.

Here's how it works:

  • Households collect food scraps in a bokashi bucket

  • Generation Soil collects buckets on regular routes

  • Food waste is composted biologically on Bristol sites

  • Living compost is returned to members

Your food waste stays in Bristol. Your compost comes back to you.

The impact so far

  • 100+ Bristol households taking part

  • 21,000+ litres of food waste diverted from landfill

  • 2,250+ litres of living compost returned

  • 1,000+ collections completed

  • Rated 5.0 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ on Google

Community composting works for:

  • Households in flats and houses

  • Gardens and allotments
