Regenerating Soil Health in Bristol, One Kitchen at a Time Through Local Composting

Generation Soil CIC is a Bristol-based Community Interest Company delivering a household food waste collection and community composting service that regenerates local soils and food systems.

We turn everyday food waste into living, microbe-rich compost that restores soil, supports local food growing, and helps Bristol thrive.

This spring, we’re inviting households across Bristol to join a simple, powerful movement:

Keep your food waste local, and grow the loop between what we eat and what we grow.

This is a practical, community-led approach to regenerating Bristol’s soils, food growing spaces, and relationship with waste.

What Is the Bristol Living Compost Project?

The Bristol Living Compost Project is our city-wide, community composting and food waste collection initiative for households and small businesses in Bristol.

When you join as a household member:

✅ You collect your food scraps at home

✅ We collect them locally across Bristol

✅ They are fermented and composted with beneficial microbes

✅ They are turned into living, microbe-rich compost

✅ That compost feeds Bristol’s gardens, allotments and food forests

Your food waste doesn’t leave the city.

It comes back to life as soil.

Why Household Composting in Bristol Matters

Most food waste collected in cities is transported long distances, taking nutrients and carbon away from local soils.

When household food waste stays in Bristol through local composting:

✅ Carbon emissions from transport are reduced

✅ Urban soils are regenerated with living compost

✅ Community food growing and allotments are supported

✅ Flood risk is reduced through healthier, more absorbent soil

✅ People reconnect with the natural cycles that sustain life

Household composting might feel small.

Across a city, it becomes a measurable climate and soil solution.

Growing the Loop: How Local Food Waste Composting Works

A simple cycle, powered by people

1️⃣ You save your food scraps at home

2️⃣ Generation Soil collects your food waste locally in Bristol

3️⃣ Food waste is fermented and composted with microbes and fungi

4️⃣ Living compost restores soil across Bristol

5️⃣ Healthy soil grows food, stores carbon and supports nature

That’s the loop. And you can be part of it.

The Impact So Far

Thanks to Our Bristol Living Compost Project Members

Through our Bristol-based household composting service, members are already creating real impact.

In 2025 alone:

✅ 32,640 litres of food waste composted locally

✅ 13.8 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions avoided

✅ 58 households and 8 businesses joined the loop

The average household contributed 178 litres per year.

Small actions. Multiplied across a city.
